Palliative Care

Comfort-focused care during serious illness — pain management, symptom relief, and care planning, available before hospice eligibility and alongside curative treatment.

  • Available with curative treatment
  • No 6-month prognosis required
  • Pain & symptom-focused
  • Goals-of-care conversations
  • Coordinated with your specialists
  • Emotional & spiritual support

Support services

Two clinical specialties woven into every plan

Built into every care plan whatever setting you choose, two specialties come standard. Every Bluebird patient gets clinical pain and symptom management, and every Bluebird family gets emotional and spiritual support — including the 13-month bereavement program that continues after care ends.

Pain & Symptom Management

Clinical management of pain, breathlessness, nausea, and the other symptoms that come at end of life. The plan is reviewed every week with the nursing team and adjusted whenever something changes — that's what the 24/7 nurse line is for.

  • Personalized pain plan, reviewed weekly
  • Medication delivery & coordination
  • Non-pharm techniques: positioning, music, touch
  • 24/7 nurse line for breakthrough symptoms
  • Side-effect monitoring & adjustment

Emotional & Spiritual Support

Care for the heart and spirit of patients and families — chaplains, social workers, counselors, and a 13-month bereavement program that doesn't end when hospice does.

  • Chaplain visits — every faith, no faith
  • Social-worker counseling for the whole family
  • Goals-of-care & legacy conversations
  • 13-month bereavement program
  • Community grief support groups

A common question

Hospice or palliative — which one do we need?

Both are about comfort. The honest answer often comes down to where the illness sits today — and what the family wants the next chapter to look like.

Hospice
Comfort-only care
When
Life expectancy of 6 months or less
Goal
Comfort, dignity, and meaningful time. Not curing the underlying illness.
Treatment
Curative treatment is paused. All care is focused on symptom relief and comfort.
Coverage
100% covered by Medicare hospice benefit. Most private insurance follows.
Setting
Home, facility, or both. Care travels with your loved one.
Palliative Care
Comfort + treatment
When
Any stage of a serious illness — no prognosis required, no time limit.
Goal
Reduce pain & symptoms while continuing other treatment goals.
Treatment
Compatible with chemotherapy, dialysis, surgery, and any curative care.
Coverage
Covered under Medicare Part B and most private insurance plans.
Setting
Home, clinic, or coordinated with your existing medical team.
Zero out-of-pocket cost
