Our story

Bluebird Hospice was founded so a family-owned hospice could serve the families we live beside.

Matt and Marie Kopmeyer founded Bluebird in Oxford, Michigan, in 2024. They run it together, today, every day.

What we believe

What we stand for

These aren't slogans on a wall. They're the questions we ask ourselves before we knock on your door — and after we leave.

Dignity

The right to be cared for as a whole person, not a diagnosis. Every Bluebird care plan starts from the question of who the patient is — what they value, what they want their last chapter to look like, what they want left undisturbed.

Comfort

The clinical practice of meeting symptoms before they meet the patient. Pain, breathlessness, nausea, anxiety, restlessness — managed actively, around the clock, with a nurse a phone call away.

Connection

Hospice is a family experience, not an individual one. Spouses, children, siblings, grandchildren — the care plan includes all of them. So does the bereavement program that follows.

Family-Centered Care

Care plans that flex around the family's rhythm. Visits scheduled around school pickup, work, meals, the rest of life. Hospice happens in the middle of someone's family — not as an interruption to it.

Why it matters

Family-owned, not private-equity-owned.

Hospice has been consolidating for a decade. Most of the names you'll see on Google searches in Oakland County now belong to national chains backed by investors who've never met a patient.

We built Bluebird the other way. The difference shows up in how the work runs. Our nurses plan to stay — we hire for it, we pay for it, and we structure the schedule to make it possible. Most of our clinical team has been doing hospice for more than a decade. The same nurse, aide, and social worker will visit your loved one most times. Continuity is the point.

We don't rush admissions to hit a quarterly target. We don't operate on the equipment-cost reduction playbook that's now standard in private-equity-owned hospices. When something doesn't go right, the person you talk to is Matt or Marie — not a corporate office two states away.

This is not a marketing line. It's the operational difference between a hospice that's accountable to a family and one that's accountable to a private-equity fund. Families notice. So do the social workers, discharge planners, and facility partners who refer to us.

The Bluebird difference
Tenured, local staff Caregivers who live where you live, working alongside us for years.
True continuity of care The same team across visits. No rotating contractors, no central call centers.
Decisions made locally Care plans are written here in Oxford — not by a quarterly profit target.
Built for the community We sponsor local events, partner with local facilities, and grieve with local families.
"We started Bluebird because we wanted to provide the level of quality care hospice services that we would expect for our own family. That's still the only standard."

Behind the care

Meet the care team

Bluebird is led by founders Matt and Marie Kopmeyer and our Medical Director, supported by a tenured team of nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, bereavement coordinators, and trained volunteers.

Registered Nurses

The clinical anchor of your loved one's care. RNs coordinate the care plan, manage symptoms and medications, and are your first call when something changes.

Certified Nurse Aides

The steady presence. Bathing, grooming, light personal care, and the small comforts that carry the most weight at end of life.

Social Workers

Family counseling, advance directives, paperwork, benefits questions, and the practical scaffolding around a hospice stay.

Chaplains

Interfaith spiritual care for any tradition, any path, or no tradition at all. Presence, prayer, conversation, ritual — whatever your family wants, on whatever schedule fits.

Bereavement Coordinators

Continued grief support for the family for 13 months after a loss. Phone calls, mailings, support groups, and one-on-one counseling, on the family's timeline.

Volunteers

Trained Bluebird volunteers give from the heart. Companionship visits, reading aloud, vigil presence, and small acts of help.

Trust by the numbers

Credentials, certifications, and what they mean

These are the certifications that matter in hospice. We display them here because families and referral partners ask about them — and because we think you should know what each one means.

Medicare Certified

Bluebird is a Medicare-certified hospice provider. This means the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have certified that we meet federal standards for clinical practice, patient safety, and quality of care. It's also what allows hospice care from Bluebird to be 100% covered by the Medicare hospice benefit.

Medicare CCN: 23-1726 · NPI: 1922867225

State of Michigan Licensed

Bluebird holds an active hospice license from the State of Michigan, which sets and audits clinical and operational standards across Michigan hospices.

MI License #: 1040000112

CHAP Accredited

Beyond Medicare certification, Bluebird is accredited by CHAP — the Community Health Accreditation Partner. Accreditation is voluntary, requires regular independent surveys, and signals an additional commitment to quality beyond the minimum federal standard.

If you want to verify any of these directly, all three certifying bodies maintain public lookup tools. We'd rather you check.

Come meet us. No pressure, no commitment.

The best way to understand whether Bluebird is right for your family is a 15-minute conversation. Call, send a note through the form, or visit our Oxford office — whichever feels right.
